Most long-retired sports stars I meet still have a gleam in their eyes, as if backlit by indelible memories of their youthful accomplishments. Mostly, it makes them seem younger than their years. Lindsay Hassett was a classic of the type.

I last saw Betty Wilson at lunch in the MCC committee room on Boxing Day. She looked and sounded as energised by life as ever. When her name was read out on a list of former Test cricketers in the room, she was warmly applauded. Her mop of curly white hair made her easy to pick out among the diners. She stood and took a small bow.

NEW Zealand-based Fiji women’s cricket rep Losi Harford was honoured to be named the first national skipper to lead the national side to the Women’s Challenge Series in Samoa. Harford, who joined the team yesterday, said she had confidence in the young and energetic local talent during a training session at Albert Park.
